What is the Altered Approach?
"Uncomfortable feelings offer something profoundly valuable... as they allow students to extend their experiences and viewpoints" (65) according to the PhD candidate in the Department of English at Cornell University, Kaelin B.C. Alexander.
I stumbled across this quote in my second semester of my freshman year at Baylor University. At the time, I was adjusting to living a new lifestyle away from my family and hometown friends. My life was shifting towards new college friends, joining a South Asian sorority, and finding out what I wanted out of my years at college. Discomfort sat at the top of my mind.
My Altered Approach aims to face discomfort head-on. I strive to revolutionize how universities and industries interact with and educate their students. As a recent college graduate, I have witnessed two years of undergraduate education and the limitations placed on its students. Rather than building on a basis of control or power struggles, I hope to shift people's minds to embrace discomfort: allowing technology freely in classrooms, stepping away from copy & paste resumes, and innovating campuses to truly fit the technologies of today. I want to take a step away from the traditional curricula that have been implemented since my parents were in college and usher in a new digital era of higher education.
We are holding ourselves back with fear of change, with reluctance to change.
The altered approach shifts the focus away from what is comfortable and convenient. This perspective will guide you towards stepping out into the advanced world and stepping away from what is most comfortable. As I continue writing, I hope that your mindset can be shifted to utilize today's technology instead of fearing it.
And in the end, I hope that I am able to slowly shift your mindset and alter your approach.
